spring Junior Competitive rowing

Junior Competitive Program

Long Island Rowing offers Junior Varsity (none to minimal experience) and Varsity Competitive rowing programs in the spring and fall for youths 10 to 19 years old.  Many of our junior athletes anticipate rowing in college and train to increase strength and improve their skills to compete on a collegiate level.

Junior Varsity athletes train to perfect Sweep rowing and Sculling skills. Training consists of both on-water rowing as well as land and gym training. Depending on their level of progress coaches will determine when JV athletes compete in weekend regattas.

Varsity athletes must be experienced and will train 5 to 7 days per week. Boat seating is competitive and dependent on a rower's experience. Varsity athletes will attend races based on age and competitive standing i.e. freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior.

Training for both JV and Varsity is 5-7 days per week and consists of on-water rowing as well as dry land and indoor gym training.  Since weather conditions can pose an on-water training challenge, if weekday on-water training is postponed then training will be extended to either Saturday or Sunday depending on the regatta schedule.

Regatta Schedule - Long Island Rowing typically participates in 3 to 6 weekend Regattas (and local scrimmages) each season. Regattas are held on either Saturday or Sunday and are posted on the appropriate seasonal schedule on this website.  Please check the schedule frequently as participation rates, transportation availability and other factors may affect regatta attendance, oftentimes at the last moment. All regatta changes will be posted as they occur.

Junior Competitive Evaluation - Both JV and Varsity athletes must participate in an evaluation. Weekend evaluation will involve 1,500 meter and 2,000 meter ERG races and technical evaluation.  At the close of evaluation, initial seating will be established based on weight adjusted ERG scores and overall performance.
